Last year and the start of this year have seen completion of a new Tourist Trail with fingerposts, waymarkers and information boards, encouraging visitors to Doune Castle to explore the surrounding area and to come into the village.

To make it still more interesting for visitors and to encourage them to linger, the KDT are suggesting a project to highlight places of interest in Doune and Deanston with small information plaques, similar in style and content to those along the High Street in Dunblane.   At the moment, unfortunately, a visitor would be hard-pressed to locate and identify somewhere like Murdoch’s pistol factory, where one of Doune’s most iconic products was once manufactured.

Over the next few weeks I am compiling a shortlist of suggestions for possible locations and am asking the community and local businesses for ideas to add to the list.  Once we have received these contributions, the list will be reviewed and the best suggestions will go forward to become part of the project.  Some example ideas are listed here, but please add as many additional suggestions as you want on a blank sheet of paper and drop off at Kilmadock Information Centre, marked ‘Historic Plaques – for the attention of Ken Russell’.  We want to get this moving as soon as possible; suggestions will be considered up until the end of March but a quick response will help us get going on the most popular suggestions.
